2020 Olympics: India Exceeds Its Best Olympic Haul Of 6 Medals With Neeraj Chopra’s Gold In Javeline

Tokyo Olympics: With Neeraj Chopra winning gold in Men’s Javelin Throw finale, India exceeds its best-ever Olympic medal haul. Debutante Chopra led the scoreboard throughout the game with 87.03 meters, 87.58 meters, and 76.79 meters throws in his first three attempts.

Earlier in the day, Bajrang Punia won bronze in the men’s freestyle 65kg event equaling the country’s best-ever Olympic medal haul. Apart from gold, India has won two silver and four bronze medals in Tokyo Olympics 2020.

Bajrang defeated Daulet Niyazbekov of Kazakhstan 8-0 to win the fourth bronze for the sub-continent.

In the morning, Bengaluru-based golfer Aditi Ashok missed the mark by a few inches and finished fourth in the women’s individual event. The 23-year-old golfer ended two strokes off the pace with a total of 15-under 269.

Other Records Created In Tokyo Olympics

Indian hockey gave one of its best performances in the Tokyo Olympics 2020. It also ended a 41-year long wait with winning an Olympic hockey medal. The men’s hockey team won bronze after defeating Germany, 5-4. With this win, the country became the most successful team in the quadrennial showpiece. Till now, Indian hockey has won 12 Olympic medals.

Despite not winning a medal, the women’s hockey team scripted history by qualifying for the semis in an Olympic event for the first time.

In badminton, PV Sindhu became the first Indian woman to win two Olympic medals. She had won a silver medal in the 2016 Olympics after losing to Spanish champion Carolin Manin.

According to the India Today report, Neeraj Chopra has also made history by becoming the first Indian track and field athlete to top their group at the Olympics.

Medals Won By India In 2012 Olympics

India recorded their best medal haul at the Olympics in London 2012. The country had sent a contingent of 83 athletes (60 men and 23 women) and won six medals.

Shooter Vijay Kumar in Men’s 25 m Rapid Fire Pistol and wrestler Sushil Kumar in Men’s 25 m Rapid-Fire Freestyle 66 kg event clinched silver medal each.

In women’s singles, Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal and boxer Mary Kom in women’s flyweight bagged a bronze medal each.

Meanwhile, wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt and shooter Gagan Narang won bronze in Men’s Freestyle 60 kg and Men’s 10 m air rifle shooting, respectively.

The Biggest Ever Contingent

India has sent the biggest ever contingent of 127 athletes participating across 18 sporting events. In Rio 2016, the Indian contingent had 117 athletes participating in 15 different sporting events.
