Rainfall after four months revives farmers’ hope in Kashmir

For the past four months, the temperature was increasing with each passing day and extreme heat-wave had gripped the plain areas in the Valley.

After nearly four months, most parts of Kashmir valley witnessed rainfall during the early morning on Wednesday. As it was raining, happy faces were witnessed in the streets and alleys as people heaved a sigh of relief from the unbearable heat-wave.

After the brief spell of rain today, people expressed happiness about the development but it was the farmer community who were the happiest among the lot.

While speaking to Digpu, Amin Bhat, a local farmer in Pulwama, said, “We were praying to Allah for the rainfall and He finally made it rain for us. Although, there has been damage to agricultural produce and orchardists have also been hit but we are still thankful that it rained finally.”

According to the local Meteorological Department, the weather will remain the same for the next couple of days, which is a good thing for the agriculture sector.

Like the entire valley, Pulwama district has seen a steady rise in temperature, leading to a drought-like situation. The water level in the streams and springs was also decreasing which made people look very upset. The schemes of the PHE department were also cancelled due to drought. In many places, people did not have access to drinking water.

It is pertinent to mention here that horticultural produce (fruits) require more rain in these four months, but this year orchards were at risk of diseases due to the constant heat.

Although it rained for a short amount of time, but it was pleasant enough for reviving hopes among the farmers and orchardists in the valley.
