Lifesaving advanced cardiac surgery performed on an 85-year-old, amidst lockdown in middle of the night.

It was in such a situation that an 85-years old patient came to Yatharth Super Speciality Hospital, Greater Noida with a complex health condition. He came to the hospital with acute chest pain on Friday night 24th April and was diagnosed with a critical Left Main Disease (90-95%) in addition to a critical Triple Vessel Disease.

The left main coronary artery (LMCA) disease is known to be the highest-risk condition of the cardiovascular system, a lesion subset ischemic heart disease, which usually indicates the need for a coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Triple vessel disease patients have a condition in which their 3 big vessels (the left anterior descending, the right coronary and the circumflex arteries) gets visibly blocked by atherosclerotic plaques (plaques forming inside arteries), which over the time, hardens and narrows the arteries.

An emergency CABG was performed in view of critical Left Main Disease and unstable angina on Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump by Yatharth Hospitals’ CTVS team led by Dr Akhil Rustagi, along with Cardiologist Dr, Pankaj Ranjan and Cardiac Anesthetist Dr. Arun Sharma.

The surgery was done on Beating Heart Support, performed amidst the lockdown in the middle of the night, while the surgical team dedicated their immediate attention and blood products were arranged by the hospital without any delay. Complete and utmost care was ensured towards hygiene and safety precaution measures, so as to keep the patient safe from any infection, especially considering the cardiovascular condition.
