How Long Can Covid-19 Survive On A Surface And In Air?

According to a new study published in the New England Journal Of Medicine, Covid-19 Virus can survive for up to 3 days on some surfaces like plastic and steel, which includes ATM Machines, daily-use plastic items, mobile phones, etc. However, as per experts, the chances of people getting infected with Covid-19 by touching these surfaces is pretty low.

In the words of Aerosol Scientist, Dr Linsey Marr, Virginia Tech, an aerosol is a minute particle in the air, much smaller than we can see. While our hair strand can be somewhere between 70-100 microns in diameter, an aerosol has almost 100 times less diameter than our hair strand.

How Long Covid-19 can survive in the air?

The Covid-19 virus is released in the air by people while talking, breathing, coughing, sneezing or even smoking and it comes out with some respiratory droplet or body fluid. Depending on its size and the ventilation in the room, the aerosol can survive in the air by half an hour.

If someone who is infected with Covid-19 coughs or sneezes, the chances of transmission increase. Even if someone is smoking around you and you are very close to them, you may be exposed to greater risks, not knowing who can transmit the virus.

The Covid-19 aerosols can get diluted in the air while travelling from an infected person to you in case there is enough distance between both of you. However, people who are in confined places with close contact with each other are at a higher risk. This is why everyone is pressing on washing and sanitizing your hands after regular intervals and staying away from every other person, maintaining a good distance.
