COVID-19: Double-digit positivity rate concerning, says CM Conrad Sangma

The Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma said that the cases in East Khasi Hills had come down significantly

Conrad Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya, on Friday stated that there was only a marginal decline in the positivity rate of new COVID-19 cases while a double-digit positivity rate was a matter of concern.

The Meghalaya CM, however, said that the cases in East Khasi Hills had come down significantly.

Taking to the micro-blogging site Twitter, Mr Conrad Sangma said, “Though the number of cases in zones like East Khasi Hills have come down significantly & there is a marginal decline in the positivity rate, the positivity rate remains in double digits which is a matter of concern.”

After taking stock of the emerging situation, the government has decided to enforce lockdown in the state from 5 AM of June 7 till 5 AM of June 14. However, the Deputy Commissioners have been authorized to allow economic activities ‘on a need basis’.

“Taking all these aspects into consideration, Govt. has decided to enforce #lockdown in Meghalaya from 5AM of 7th June till 5AM of 14th June 2021. DCs to open up economic activities on a need basis,” Conrad Sangma informed on Friday.

He went on to say, “DCs/SDOs are authorised to permit limited non-essential economic activities on need basis in Urban & Rural Areas. In rural areas, permission of such activities by DCs may be considered on recommendation of the BDOs where the prevalence of active cases is Nil or very low.”

Calling the latest order of restriction as “a tough decision” for the government, the chief minister said that they understood the hardships faced by the people. “But the health and safety aspect also need to be considered. I urge and appeal to everyone to cooperate and work together with the Government,” Conrad Sangma asked.

In the order, the government said, “Entry of tourists from outside the state will not be permitted and all tourist spots will remain closed. The inter-state movement of persons will be restricted. This will not apply of transit vehicles of Assam, Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram. International border trade will be regulated by the Deputy Commissioners. Weddings, sports activities are not permitted. Funeral gatherings to be restricted to 10 persons with prior permission of the respective Deputy Commissioners, SDO (Civil).”

Earlier, the Meghalaya government had imposed lockdown only in East Khasi Hills district till June 7 besides containment zone measures in other places to contain the spread of COVID-19.

It needs to be mentioned that Meghalaya on Friday reported 18 more COVID-19 deaths while 584 new positive cases of Coronavirus were also confirmed.
