Dead bodies being left on banks of Ganges under compulsion, says Rahul Gandhi

Rahul Gandhi said that those people who left the dead bodies of their loved ones on the banks of the Ganges were forced to do so because they were ‘under compulsion’

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday expressed through a tweet on his official handle that he didn’t like to share the pictures of dead bodies, but the pain of those who lost their loved ones due to the pandemic of COVID-19 and failed to manage dignified last rites for the slain needs to be understood.

Rahul Gandhi said that the country and the world is sad to see the photos of dead bodies, being shared widely on social media.

Rahul Gandhi said that those people who left the dead bodies of their loved ones on the banks of Ganges were forced to do so because they were ‘under compulsion’.

The Congress leader wrote, “I do not like sharing photos of dead bodies. The country and the world are sad to see the photo, but those who left their loved ones on the banks of the Ganges under compulsion, their pain must also be understood – the mistake is not theirs.”

Saying the BJP-led Central government was responsible for the tragic instances, he remarked, “Its responsibility is not only collective but only on the Central government.”

Pertinently, hundreds of dead bodies were seen floating in the shallow waters of Ganges river in the past two weeks as the Coronavirus outbreak in the country set new records for mortality.

The enigma surrounding the bodies remains unsolved, and it’s unclear how many people were infected with the Coronavirus.

Many think, though, that families took drastic measures because they couldn’t afford to have their relatives cremated — a ritual that used to cost around Rs. 5,000 here but has risen to nearly Rs 30,000 since late last month when a second wave of the pandemic hit the country.
