In the garb on ‘security, J-K Govt adding to the miseries of people: Mehbooba Mufti

Mehbooba Mufti said that the authorities were preventing her from ‘reaching out to the people in distress’ on ‘excuses’ of security and COVID-19

Mehbooba Mufti, the former Chief Minister of erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir State and President of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday said that the LG-led administration in Jammu and Kashmir is adding to the miseries of people by harassing them in one way or the other on the name of ‘security.’

Mehbooba Mufti added that the authorities were preventing her from ‘reaching out to the people in distress’ on ‘excuses’ of security and COVID-19.

“In J&K, besides security, COVID has become another excuse to prevent me from reaching out to people in distress,” she said.

Mehbooba accused the Government of India of wanting to obfuscating the truth and brushing such tragedies (referring to a recent suicide by a youth in Kulgam district in southern Kashmir) under the rug.

She tweeted, “In J&K besides security COVID has become another excuse to prevent me from reaching out to people in distress. GOI wants to obfuscate the truth & brush such tragedies under the rug.”

The former CM said that she wanted to visit the family of Kulgam youth, who recently committed suicide owing to non-payment of his father’s salary by the government, but was not allowed to proceed by the authorities.

Mehbooba Mufti said that the authorities make sure that no visit of LG Manoj Sinha is affected due to security or Covid situation, but she is only given excuses when trying to visit the aggrieved people. “They don’t visit to condole such families and don’t even let me do so,” she rued.

She said the family in Noorabad area of Kulgam was helpless as the authorities had stopped their lone bread-winner’s salary from the last two-and-a-half years.

“The teacher’s salary was withheld because he was a former militant, but had renounced that path. His helplessness forced his son to take such an extreme step like committing suicide,” Mehbooba said.

According to her, this is not an isolated case but many such government employees are being harassed on the name of ‘security’.

“On the one hand, the government wants youth to renounce the militancy but on the other hand, the same people who heed to the calls towards mainstream are harassed,” she said.
