Kashmiri students stuck in Bangladesh demand immediate evacuation

New Delhi, India —

With the authorities in Bangladesh imposing a total lockdown from Tuesday, Kashmiri students, who are stuck in their colleges in the country, are making consistently fervent appeals to the Indian government for their immediate evacuation.

Desperate to leave Bangladesh, the students have been making fervent appeals from the last couple of days.

“We are being subjected to all sorts of hardships. Such is the treatment with us as if we are infected already,” says one of the students.

Another girl student, who couldn’t stop crying, says, “We want to make the authorities in India understand that Bangladesh is imposing a total lockdown. It is not clear when will this end. If the situation goes out of control, who would care and help us here.”

Meanwhile, many students said that they are ready to be quarantined anywhere in J&K but not in Bangladesh. “Please ask them (Indian authorities) to test us for COVID-19 and quarantine us for 20 days. But please evacuate us immediately,” one of the students said.

The distressed students appealed to the Indian government as well as the J&K government to intervene and help them to reach their homes in Kashmir.

Nobody in Bangladesh was ready to take our responsibility, given the COVID-19 outbreak at an alarming rate,” the students said, adding, “Malaysian students were also stranded here but they were airlifted by their government. Does the Indian government care about us?”

Although certain media reports quoted Advisor to Lieutenant Governor J&K, Baseer Ahmed Khan as having said that the matter is under active consideration with the Government of India. However, nothing has been happening for the distressed lot.

Pertinently, almost 70 Kashmiri students were left stranded on Tuesday at Bangladesh’s border with India (International Passenger Terminal Benapole Landport, Jashore), hoping the authorities would evacuate them.

Digpu News Network has been received a lot of distress calls and messages from the students from yesterday evening. They say that they were left at a crossroads as they were not being allowed to enter the Indian side, given the closure of all borders by Government of India.

Also, the government suspended all international and domestic flights, besides sealing borders and entry points. The decision was taken to contain the epidemic.

In the changed circumstances, since both India and Bangladesh imposed a lockdown in their respective countries, the students are desperate to cross over to their native country.
