Rahul Gandhi accuses ‘one man and his arrogance’ for making Indians poorer

The Congress leader made this veiled attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi through a Twitter

Congress leader and Member of Parliament, Rahul Gandhi on Monday said that ‘one man and his arrogance’ was responsible for making Indians poorer post the second wave of COVID-19 in the country.

The Congress leader made this veiled attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi through a tweet on his official handle.

Rahul Gandhi wrote, “One man and his arrogance + One virus and its mutants” while responding to a news report that quoted Mahesh Vyas as having said that 97% of Indians became poorer post-Covid with a steady fall in salaried jobs.

In the tweet posted by Rahul Gandhi, he said that Congress wanted to know from Mahesh Vyas whether India’s economy can make another quick recovery, given the drastic fall in economic activity and consequent job losses.

Mahesh Vyas is the CEO of the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), a leading business information company. It was established in 1976, primarily as an independent think tank.

“What we’ve seen in April 2021 is that the unemployment rate went up to 8 per cent, the labour participation rate stabilized at 40 per cent, and things were not looking very good. Very quickly in May, we saw the situation worsening. The unemployment rate rose to 14.5 per cent, then became 14.7 per cent in the week ended May 23. So we’re really looking at unemployment rising, and labour participation rates stalling,” Vyas had said in an exclusive chat with IndiaSpend.

Asked about the recovery prediction, Mr Vyas said the situation looked a little different this time. “I feel a little more worried than last time. Last time, there was a very deep fall; we fell off the cliff, almost. But then we came back very quickly as well. But what’s happened is that many indicators including the labour market are showing a decline. And then imagine when the pandemic hit us, that kind of fell off a few percentage points and continued to decline. We did not recover. And we continue to decline,” he said.

He added, “No one is putting money into real capacity creation. The government is unwilling to do that. So if the government is unwilling, if the corporate sector has got no reason to do that, if micro, small and medium enterprises are under a serious crunch, and then households are largely compromised because of lack of jobs and income, what’s going to change this? If the government doesn’t do anything, I think we are going to be in trouble.”

It is pertinent to mention that Rahul Gandhi on Sunday reiterated ‘Movid’ attack jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, tweeting a chart mentioning traits of selected world leaders.

Taking to Twitter, the Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted a chart called ‘the populists’ checklist’ that mentions traits of selected right-wing leaders across the globe. “Full marks to Movid,” he captioned the tweet.
