Sunderlal Bahuguna should be honored with Bharat Ratna, says Arvind Kejriwal

Arvind Kejriwal made remarks at a memorial service for Bahuguna held at the Delhi Legislative Assembly

Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi, on Thursday, sought to request the Centre that the country’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, be bestowed posthumously on famous environmentalist Sunderlal Bahuguna.

“Shri Sunderlal Bahuguna ji devoted his whole life to environmental protection. My appeal to the Government of India is that Late Shri Sunderlal Bahuguna ji should be honored with Bharat Ratna,” Arvind Kejriwal said while paying tributes to late Bahuguna in Delhi where the CM also met Bahuguna’s family.

In this respect, Kejriwal stated that he will write a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He made these remarks at a memorial service for Bahuguna held at the Delhi Legislative Assembly. At the event, saplings were planted and a picture of Bahuguna was revealed.

Using the appreciation of Bahuguna’s son to pitch the image of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as a party against corruption, Kejriwal tweeted a quote of Rajeev Bahuguna, son Mr. Sunderlal Bahuguna, in Hindi, “Just like a vaccine cures the disease of COVID-19, a vaccine named Aam Aadmi Party cures corrupt politics in the same way.”

The environmentalist, who died on May 21, was recognized for his pioneering role in the Chipko Movement in Uttarakhand.

Bahuguna was recognized all over the world, according to the chief minister, and every minute of his life encourages others.

The Chipko movement was a forest conservation campaign in India that was started by Bahuguna in the Himalayan foothills in Uttarakhand, then a part of Uttar Pradesh, in 1973. It eventually became a focal point for a variety of environmental initiatives throughout the world.
