SRINAGAR (J&K)

Three militants have been killed in a fierce gunfight in the Kokernag area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Tuesday morning.

According to a local police officer, who wished anonymity, joint forces including the Special Operations Group (SOG) wing of Jammu and Kashmir Police, Indian Army’s 19 RR, and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) surrounded the Sheikhpora Vailoo area after receiving information about the presence of militants in a house.

As per him, the Kokernag gunfight began amid the rainfall with door-to-door searches being performed by the government forces.

“As the search party approached a house owned by Javaid Ahmed Khan, militants present there opened fire on the search party without any warning. The joint team of security forces retaliated by firing back, resulting in a gun battle,” he said.

He further informed, “According to the information we have received, three militants, two from south Kashmir and one from Srinagar, were believed to be trapped inside the house.”

“In the ensuing gunfight, one militant was killed initially. Later, two more were killed. However, the identities of the slain militants are still unknown,” the police officer said.

It is pertinent to mention here that 46 militants have been killed in Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory this year alone, the majority of whom are from the southern Valley’s Shopian district.
