NEW DELHI — Rahul Gandhi, Congress leader and Member of Parliament, on Saturday slammed the Bhartiya Janata Party led Central government over its failure to resolve the border dispute between India and China and among the states of Assam and Mizoram.
The Congress leader said that neither the national nor the state borders of the country were secure under the present dispensation.
According to Mr Rahul, controversies and riots are sprouting like seedlings in our country’s hallowed territory, with disastrous repercussions.
“Neither the national border is secure nor the state border. Controversies and riots are being sown like seeds in the holy land of our country – the consequences are and will be dire,” the Congress leader said while using hashtags like #MizoramAssam #LAC in the tweet, to provide a context for the comments.
The Assam-Mizoram border dispute stretches back nearly a century and a half. While inter-state disagreements between other Northeastern states have resulted in many showdowns, the rivalry between Assam and Mizoram has seldom resulted in violence. On Monday, though, it reached new heights, with at least six Assam police officers killed and more than 50 others injured in shooting on the inter-state border.
On the other hand, the Indian Army and the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) have held 11 rounds of talks between corps commander-ranked officers since June 6 last year to resolve the border row in eastern Ladakh, but the two sides have only had limited success in hammering out an agreement for disengagement of rival soldiers deployed at friction points on the contested LAC.
After the ninth round of negotiations in mid-February, the military dialogue’s sole notable accomplishment was the pullout of front-line soldiers and weaponry in the Pangong Tso region.
