Bhai Dooj: Story and Significance

The relationship of a brother and sister is special and unique. One can’t describe the bond in words. This relationship is always special as siblings are the chosen friends that we get. It is very important that this connection be celebrated and acknowledged every once in a while.

The Hindu culture has two days in a year that celebrate the relationship of a brother and sister. One being Rakshabandhan and the other being Bhai Dooj. Bhai dooj is celebrated two days after Diwali i.e. today. Bhai dooj is also known as Bhaubeej, Bhaiyadooj, Bhai Teeka or Bhai Phota in various parts of the country. It is observed on the last or fifth day of Diwali.

On this day, the sisters pray to Lord Yamraj, God of Death, for the long life and prosperity of their brothers. This auspicious day is an opportunity for sisters to host feasts for their brothers and sister-in-laws by inviting them to their homes. Sisters usually give presents or gifts to their brothers.

As per Hindu Mythology, it is known that Yamraj loved his sister a lot. Hence, he declared that all the brothers who receive a red tika on their forehead and an aarti from their sisters on this day, shall not fear death.

Another story says that Yamraj was invited to his sister, Yamuna’s house several times, but he could not go. When he finally got a chance to visit her she has prepared a big feast for him and this made Yamraj immensely happy. On this day, Yamraj asked Yamuna to ask for a wish that he would fulfil. She asked that a day should be marked each year for Yamraj to visit her home. Therefore, the tradition of Bhai dooj began from this day.
