December 4th: Indian Navy Day

Indian Navy Day is celebrated on 4th December every year in commemoration of Operation Trident

Indian Navy is the marine branch of Indian Armed Forces. The president of India is the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Navy. The Indian Navy secures the marine edges of the country. The main objective of Indian Navy is to improve the circumstances in the Indian Ocean. It also helps maintain worldwide relations by visiting searports, providing upheaval help, etc. 

History of Indian Navy Day

Indian Navy Day is celebrated on 4th December every year in commemoration of the Operation Trident. During the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War, Indian Navy launched an attack on the Pakistan Naval Headquarters, Karachi, on the night of December 4th. Four Pakistani vessels were drowned and the Karachi fuel fields were ravaged. During this famous operation, more than 500 Pakistani Navy Personnel lost their lives, while there was no loss of life in India. 

Celebrations of Indian Navy Day

Before this day, a complete Navy Week is celebrated and Navy Day being the Finale. On this day, the warships and the aircrafts of the Indian Navy are open for visitors. Some contests like Navy Ball, Navy Queen, and many more are part of the Navy Fest. A Military Photo Exhibition is also held by photojournalists of Ernakulam as a part of the Navy Fest. 

Each year has a particular theme of celebration. The theme for 2020 is ‘Indian Navy – Combat Ready, Credible and Cohesive’. Some of the previous themes were:

2019 – ‘Indian Navy – Silent, Strong and Swift’

2018 – ‘Indian Navy – Mission-deployed and Combat-ready’
