February 2nd: World Wetlands Day – Theme and Significance

World Wetlands Day aims to educate people about the importance of wetlands to the planet and to the livelihood of the planet.

Wetlands are water sources that are saturated or flooded with water permanently or seasonally. The wetlands function as their own ecosystem and identifying them is very simple. These wetlands are primarily recognized by the vegetation that has adapted to the wet soil. Annually, on 2nd February, World Wetlands Day is observed. This day marks the signing of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance in Ramsar, Iran in 1971.

History and Significance

Apart from the commemoration of signing the Ramsar Convention, this day is an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of wetlands for people and the planet. Water is an essential part of this planet, and currently, we are facing a scarcity of freshwater resources. The amount of fresh water being used is more than the Planet can replenish. Thus, the ecosystem dependant on water and life on the water is being threatened.
