January 1st: New Year’s Day – Global Celebrations

New Year’s Day is the first day of the new year according to the Gregorian Calendar i.e 1st January.

Almost the entire world recognizes January 1st as New Year’s Day. It is the first holiday of the year and is almost celebrated by the entire world. It is the time when people plan and make resolutions for the upcoming year. New year’s day is a public holiday in many countries who follow the Gregorian Calendar. This makes 1st Jan the world’s most widely celebrated holiday. 

History and Background

According to the old Roman Calendar, 15th march was celebrated as New Year’s Day. However, the evolution from the lunar calendar to the Gregorian calendar commenced with the early Roman calendar. Currently, everyone is following the Gregorian Calendar. Due to this, everyone celebrates a common new year on 1st January every year.

Various Historians credit Julius Ceasar, the Roman Emporer, for developing and designating 1st January as the first day of a new year. In 1582, the Gregorian Calendar was introduced when Pope Gregory XIII aligned the calendar with the earth’s rotation around the Sun, marking 365 Days.

Resolutions and celebrations

This day is usually used by people to create resolutions for the upcoming year. Some make resolutions like lose weight in 6 months, eat healthy food, do not eat junk food, etc. More than a celebration, today is like a welcome for the new year. People stay home and relax after the party of New Year’s Eve. Some are also at home taking care of their hangover and getting a head start to the new year.
