Kargil War: Rahul Gandhi pays tributes to ‘fighters’ who made ‘supreme sacrifice’

“We will always remember this supreme sacrifice of you and your families for the security of the country,” the Congress leader posted on his official Twitter handle about Kargil War soldiers.

NEW DELHI — Rahul Gandhi, Congress leader and Member of Parliament, on Monday paid tributes to the ‘fighters’ who laid down their lives during the Kargil War of 1999.

“Heartfelt tribute to every fighter who laid down his life in the dignity of our tricolour. We will always remember this supreme sacrifice of you and your families for the security of the country. Jai Hind. #KargilVijayDiwas,” the Congress leader posted on his official Twitter handle.

Meanwhile, the Congress party also paid their tributes on the occasion. In a tweet, the party said, “July 26th marks Kargil Vijay diwas, a day we honour the bravery and sacrifice of the Indian Defence forces. Our tribute to the heroes who protect us & inspire the nation.”

Earlier, Rahul also described the landslides in Himachal Pradesh as very sad. He said, “The news of the damage caused by landslides in Himachal Pradesh is very sad. My condolences to the families of the deceased. I wish the injured a speedy recovery.”

Rahul Gandhi also appealed to the Congress workers to help in rescue work. “Congress comrades, please cooperate in relief and rescue work,” he asked.

Pertinently, Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated on 26 July every year in honour of the Kargil War’s Heroes. This day is celebrated in the Kargil sector and the national capital New Delhi, where the Prime Minister of India pays homage to the soldiers at Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate every year. Functions are also organized all over the country to commemorate the contributions of the armed forces.

On July 26 in 1999, India successfully took command of the high outposts after the Kargil war was fought for more than 60 days and ended on 26 July 1999 with the Pakistani Army taking advantage of the melting snow and took command of the high outposts of India.

The Pakistani Army denied involvement in the war, claiming that it was caused by independent Kashmiri militant forces.

The Kargil war resulted in loss of life on both the sides and was ended when India regained control over the post and ejected the Pakistani Army out of the territory.
