At the end of the second days’ play, England consolidated its grip on the Test, scoring 423/8 in 129 hours. The hosts now lead India by 345 runs, with two wickets still remaining.

Joe Root scores century, day 2 highlights

Joe Root scored a splendid century before getting bowled to a Bumrah quickie. He faced 165 runs and hit 14 boundaries.

Root rejoiced the 23rd century of his Test career- drawing level with Kevin Pietersen as the second-best England century-maker.

David Malan scored 70 runs, while Haseeb Hameed and Rory Burns made 68 and 61 runs, respectively.

The Indian bowlers toiled hard and did well throughout the day, taking eight England wickets. Mohammed Shami topped the list with three wickets in 27 overs, giving away 87 runs.

Mohammed Siraj and Ravindra Jadeja bagged two wickets each, while Ishant Sharma went wicketless.

CricBuzz.com wrote, “For a bunch who’ve had more good days than bad in recent times, and who together perhaps constitute one of India’s finest attacks, this day was a very different challenge. 

“It wasn’t as much about tearing down the opposition as it was damage control for a change. And it must have demanded very different skills.”
